On Sunday, August 17, more than 1,000 riders, volunteers, survivors, and supporters filled the American Family Field parking lot for the inaugural Audaxity bike ride, a movement that brought together participants from across Wisconsin, across the nation, and even internationally. The energy was undeniable as researchers, clinicians, patients, survivors, families, and friends united in one shared mission: to accelerate cancer discoveries that lead to better detection, treatments, and outcomes for patients everywhere.
The “Breakthrough Ride” was proof of what happens when communities rally behind discovery. For people facing cancer today, the ride showed that they are not alone—and demonstrated the power of science and community coming together with urgency and determination to end cancer.
The Rev Up
The hype started Friday, August 15, at The Rev Up, the very first community event held inside the new MCW Center for Cancer Discovery. It was a celebration of what had already been achieved and a rallying moment for the breakthroughs still to come. Participants filled the space with energy, enjoying food, music, and camaraderie while hearing from Audaxity leaders, researchers, and supporters who reminded them why the ride matters.
Gustavo Leone, PhD, MCW Cancer Center Director, welcomed the crowd and reflected on what made the moment so powerful. “Audaxity is proof of what happens when a community comes together,” he said. “Every mile ridden and every dollar raised fuels the discoveries in this building that will change the future for patients and families.”
The program also included remarks from James Thomas, MD, PhD, Associate Director of Translational Research, who moderated a survivor panel. Two powerful voices carried the evening: Harriet Pfersch, a lung cancer survivor and avid cyclist, spoke about how meaningful it was to see thousands of people rally behind patients like her, and how the ride symbolized both resilience and possibility. Mike Hamann, a kidney cancer survivor treated at the Rare Cancer and Precision Medicine Clinic, shared how deeply touched he was to witness the community come together, knowing that the funds raised through Audaxity would help save more lives.
The Breakthrough Ride
On Sunday morning, the excitement was palpable as groups of riders departed from American Family Field at staggered times to tackle their chosen routes. From the 100-mile century riders to families pedaling the 5-mile loop, every participant rode with determination and purpose. Along the way, rest stops offered food, drinks, encouragement, and bursts of entertainment that kept spirits high and legs moving.
Crossing the finish line was unforgettable. Riders were welcomed back by a sea of cheers, cowbells clanging, orange pompoms waving, and medals placed proudly around their necks, each one inscribed with the words “Breakthrough Ride.” The Milwaukee Bucks’ Bango and drumline added extra flair, while the MCW Orchestra filled the lot with music that gave the celebration a triumphant tone. Families decorated dedication flags in honor of loved ones, children joined in the festivities, and the community stood shoulder to shoulder in support of the cause.
A survivor’s bell invited those who had faced cancer to ring it with pride. Beside it, a sign declared: Do you hear that? That’s the sound of cancer losing. Each ring carried the weight of countless journeys and victories, echoing through the celebration.
A Movement That’s Just Beginning
Thanks to founding sponsor Associated Bank, and several other sponsors, every dollar raised through Audaxity goes directly toward the groundbreaking research happening at the MCW Cancer Center. Their support helped turn one day of riding and celebration into something much larger: a lasting force for discovery and progress.
The Breakthrough Ride is just the beginning; it marks the beginning of a movement to change what it means to face cancer. And the momentum is still building. Teams will continue to fundraise through October 31, extending the impact of the ride and driving even greater change.
The Audaxity team thanks every rider, volunteer, donor, and supporter who makes this movement possible. We’re excited to see you back on the road next year.
